Environment: a Low-carbon Transport and Logistics Solution Pioneer

GEODIS is a low-carbon transport and logistics solution pioneer, and we continually strive to reduce our carbon footprint and limit polluting emissions. We also seek to optimize the use of natural resources, both in terms of transport as well as our on-site behavior. In every way, we work hard to control and reduce the environmental impact of our activities as we contribute to the fight against climate change.

CO2 expertise that sets the standard

GEODIS is aware of the role it plays when it comes to climate change, and we are committed to improving carbon efficiency. In 2018, as a leader in the freight and logistics sector decarbonization movement, GEODIS posted an overall goal of a 30% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2030 (reference year: 2017).

Thanks to the Oxygen project that we launched in 2010, GEODIS is meeting requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Oxygen is structured around four areas of improvement, and is applied at every level of the organization, with tailored action plans for each entity and each stakeholder.

The Oxygen project’s three areas of improvement

  • MEASURING: We carry out an annual global carbon inventory that includes direct and indirect emissions (scopes 1, 2 and 3).
  • AVOIDING AND REDUCING EMISSIONS: We reduce GHG emissions and improve GEODIS’ carbon efficiency.
  • PARTNERING AND ADVOCATING FOR SOLUTIONS: We develop partnerships to improve the efficiency of the transport sector through mobilization with the different industry stakeholders
Scope 1: direct emissions from stationary or mobile sources
Scope 2: indirect emissions associated with electricity production
Scope 3: other indirect emissions

Environmental tools

Modeling and reporting tool

At GEODIS, we support clients in reducing the environmental impact of their supply chain by using our own modeling tools and integrating them into our information systems. This allows the systematic reporting of CO2 emissions generated by the services we offer our clients.

GHG and pollutants emissions calculation tool

GEODIS offers you an online tool to calculate the GHG and pollutants emissions of logistics chains. This new tool allows you to compare the environmental impact of various transportation modes around the world.

Our solutions

GEODIS develops intelligent solutions for clients that are respectful of the environment: “low-carbon” transport, multimodal solutions that combine Air, Road, Maritime, Inland Waterways and Rail, the use of alternative energies vehicles (natural gas vehicles,  electric vehicles), and more.

External recognition of our environmental success

In 2020, GEODIS has received a score of A- by CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project), an international, non-profit organization that manages the largest environmental disclosure system for companies and cities. The Group is now categorized as a ‘Leader’ in environmental care. This result recognizes the global logistics provider as a Leader that implements the relevant actions to effectively reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting outstanding environmental management. The achievement is encouraging given that only 14% of companies assessed by CDP from around the world have been rated “A –“ or higher.

The optimized use of natural resources

The transport and logistics sector is also confronted with energy efficiency and waste management issues.

GEODIS relies on the ISO 14001 standard, which includes all measures intended to reduce the consumption of electricity, gas and water at sites. In this context, GEODIS is deploying innovative solutions to improve performance at our sites such as Enlighted technology, an intelligent lighting system based on the use of LEDs.

The Group also designs and implements solutions based on circular economy principles and provides comprehensive life cycle management services for electrical and electronic products. The goal is to prolong the operating life of equipment and to get maximum value from these products. At the same time, we also promote the recycling of plastic or cardboard waste and the returning of packaging to resell it as raw materials.

The environmental programs established as part of the ISO 14001 standard also serve as a framework for the choice and maintenance of our vehicles and equipment, the monitoring of use (turning off the engine when not in motion, the use of on-board telematics, etc.), the scheduling of trips, the use of best practices, driver awareness and our fuel purchasing strategy.

A commitment to better air quality

GEODIS establishes transport solutions with the highest environmental performance in order to limit the impact of our activities on air quality and the health of the population.

In particular, this involves developing urban logistics tailored to environmental issues concentrated in city centers (pollution, noise, road traffic congestion, etc.). At GEODIS, this consists of guaranteeing our clients clean, competitive delivery by adhering to the sustainable supplying of the city, but also by participating as an innovative intra-urban last-mile operator. To this end, the Group adapts to regulatory and societal changes and offers a solution driven by three priorities:

  • The first is related to property. It has to do with having strategically placed distribution center that are near enough to high-density areas so that they minimize the number of trips and optimize the number of stops at client locations.
  • The second challenge concerns the reduction of the environmental impact of urban logistics. This is why the Group is using its approach to innovation to experiment more frequently with the use of alternative vehicles. This includes electric vehicles and those than run on compressed or liquid natural gas.
  • The third challenge consists of the exploration of new cooperation and partnership possibilities, such as developing new services within Eco-neighborhoods.

Initiated in Shanghai and Paris, this urban logistics offer is aimed at distribution in city centers around the world.
