5)  Federal Plastics Registry Reporting for Canada Due September 29, 2025

The Government of Canada is requiring certain businesses to submit reports to the Federal Plastics Registry by September 29, 2025. This requirement is part of Phase 1 of the federal plastics reporting initiative, which aims to improve tracking and management of plastic products in the Canadian market.

Who Must Report?

Phase 1 applies to producers, retailers, importers, and manufacturers who produced or imported more than 1,000 kilograms of the specified products in 2024. If your business meets this threshold, you are required to submit a report.

What Needs to Be Reported?

The reporting requirement covers the following product categories:

  • Plastic packaging (both filled and unfilled)
  • Electronics and electrical equipment
  • Single-use or disposable products

It is important to note that while apparel and textiles are designated for Phase II reporting, Phase I does apply to disposable plastic packaging used for shipping apparel products.

Reporting Guidance

For detailed instructions on how to complete your submission, refer to the Phase I reporting guide.

Key Deadline

All required reports must be submitted by September 29, 2025.

Next Steps

If your company is involved in producing, importing, or selling plastic packaging, electronics, or single-use plastic products in Canada and exceeds the 1,000kg threshold, ensure you are prepared to comply with this new reporting obligation. Review the guidance, gather the necessary data, and submit your report ahead of the deadline to avoid any compliance issues.
